CMS resources

CMS Data Navigator

The CMS Data Navigator provides options to locate information, data and statistics by topic and/or program. The interactive tool provides for selections that can combine filters and focus responses by specific user interests.

Many of the following CMS resources are included in the resources accessed by the Data Navigator. We list them separately to provide an alternative access route.

CMS Research, Statistics, Data and Systems Website: Statistics, Trends and Reports section

Another approach to CMS resources can be found on the Research, Statistics, Data & Systems page of the CMS website. Listings appear under the subheading Statistics, Trends and Reports. Topics for data sources include, among others, the following:

  • Chronic Conditions, with links to county-level Medicare data
  • Data Compendium
  • Medicare Drug Spending Dashboard
  • Medicare Advantage/Part D Contract and Enrollment Data
  • Medicare Enrollment Reports
  • Medicare Fee-for-service for Parts A & B
  • Medicare Geographic Variation
  • Medicare and Medicaid Statistical Supplement
  • National Health Expenditure Data

CMS Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) General Information

There are links to statistical resources and MAX Issue Briefs from the MAX data file page on the CMS website. Issue Briefs are developed from MAX data, usually based on a subset of states. The MAX Data Validation Tables are also linked from this page. They include counts for many MAX variables from the state calendar year data files.

CMS Statistics and Reports on Medicare-Medicaid Dually Eligibles

The CMS Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office maintains a website for Analytic Reports and Data Resources. Downloadable data includes the Medicare-Medicaid Linked Enrollee Analytic Data Set (MMLEADS) Public Use File. Information includes utilization, expenditure and chronic condition statistics. Counts of dually eligible by state and county are also available.

CMS Files for Order: Non-Identifiable Files

CMS offers several data files that contain information on a wide range of Medicare and Medicaid topics. Please visit the CMS website for a listing of the files, with links to files descriptions and access information, either download instructions or an order form, as applicable.

Chronic Conditions Data Warehouse (CCW)

The Chronic Condition Data Warehouse has a collection of tables and charts on their website covering both Medicare and Medicaid populations and data. Topics include:

  • Enrollment counts
  • Chronic Condition statistics
  • Cost and Utilization
  • Counts of beneficiaries with completed Nursing Home or Home Health Assessments
  • Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Data
National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) SEER-Medicare data resources

NCI has linked data from SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results) cancer registry sites to Medicare claims and enrollment data. The following SEER-Medicare data resources are limited to those Medicare beneficiaries who are included in the linked SEER-Medicare data. This means that the frequencies are not necessarily generalizable. They will provide an insight into which treatments, diagnoses and drugs may appear in the Medicare claims data.

Links to downloadable data include:
